Permits, more than a necessity

They are more than formality and have a lot to do with safety so check out all requirements before you engage in any structural or major house renovation. Most countries require certification and approval of plans and other details before work even commences for safety of the community and your own. More specialized work such as electrical, water, gas and structural works are to be done only by licensed or accredited (professional/trained) people who have knowledge of the right tools and equipment to make them safe for you and your family. Most simple repairs are allowed but anything that entails re-location, addition or removal of such systems that has a profound influence on safety must be approved, done and inspected by the right people.
